A green shake that a kid will drink
Sam attended a birthday party a swim club that also has a café and smoothie bar. While the kids were having a blast in the pool, having run out of the house without eating lunch, I headed over to the café with another Mom.
I ordered a shake with kale and avocado and pineapple, which was really good. I headed back to the pool area with it and was stopped immediately by Sam saying, “What’s that? Can I have some?” Then he thought about it and asked, “What’s in it?”
Now, let’s be serious here, if I mention the word “kale” that will be met with a face and sound effects, the word “avocado” might send him running back to the pool to hide, so I said, “try it first and then I will tell you.” He looked suspicious and thought about it for a few seconds and said, “OK!” I guess he figured if I hadn’t keeled over from it, it couldn’t be that bad, or could it? He closed his eyes and took a sip. I closed my eyes waiting for him to spit green all over my white pants. Nothing! I look and he’s taking more sips and says, “This is really good. What’s in it?” I said, “have a few more sips and then I’ll tell you.” After drinking almost half of it, he begged me to tell him. I told him about the kale and avocado and got a face, but he STILL. KEPT. DRINKING. IT. I actually had to tell him to go back into the pool to get it away from him. He came back later looking for more, but I had finished it. Yeah, that didn’t go over well.
A couple of weeks later, he was sitting playing with some toys and said, “Hey, can you make me that green smoothie?” Wait, you’re asking for kale or spinach? Um, yes, sure, I’ll go make that right now. And it’s Ok if I put avocado in it? Affirmative! So Sam’s Green Shake was born. I hope you and your kids enjoy it as much as he does.
Sam’s Green Shake
A large handful of baby spinach (or kale)
1/2 cup pineapple
½ cup whole milk kefir
1 tsp vanilla extract (in glycerin)
1/4 cup ice
Add all ingredients to a blender and process until smooth. Pour into two glasses and serve. Sam likes his garnished with a strawberry.
